Trace metal mobilization during combustion of biomass fuels : PIER final project report
prepared for California Energy Commission, Public Interest Energy Research Program ; prepared by University of California, Davis.
Date: 2008

Compares wood, rice straw, wheat straw fuel stocks.

Ash properties characterized. See especially discussion on p 87 and “Toxicity” chart on p 95: woody biomass ash and c&d ash from industrial boilers above regulatory thresholds for certain metals, with suggestion that these ashes could be classified as hazardous wastes.

As usual we will pay for a few to profit with our health, dirty air, dirty water, contaminated land, devastated forest and in some cases our lives will be lost. Wouldn't it be nice if they would be responsible enough to do research and real scientific studies done before they inflict this injustice on the masses without a thought to the suffering they are causing. They maybe wealthy and irrogant but they are really idiots to think the people can't see what's going on. Oh, that's right they have bought and paid for our government. I hope it cost them plenty because it's costing us plenty and we don't even profit from it. Shame on the corporation that build biomass and biofuel technologies. The plants do stink but I'm not sure if that's the old money buidling it or the back room deals with subsidies abound.

ENTRAPMENT: One citizen was a victim of entrapment when police ordered him onto GRU public space from a position he had consistently held on the city-maintained sidewalk so that the police could issue the trespass warning.

iWatch just published an excellent article on the need for EPA to pay more attention to discrimination claims from communities like Port St. Joe. In tight budget times making environmental justice a priority is a challenge, but this is an important issue for our nation's most vulnerable communities.

I was present when the Mayor and Council of Port St. Joe unanimously approved this boondoggle even though the vast majority of over 200 citizens spoke passionately against it. Afterwards the Mayor trailed PSJ NAACP President Amy Rogers onto the front lawn and verbally accosted her, with such vigor that her vice-president ran to get a man with a camera (George Rhynes, NAACP videographer for south Georgia) whose presence stopped the Mayor's verbal assault. I've never seen an elected official behave so disrespectfully to a woman, nor to an NAACP president. Given his disrespect for the NAACP elected offical, it is quite understandable how they would disrespect the Highland View and Millview communities. Another Councilmember who owns "Bo Knows Pest Control" actually demanded that all those born in PSJ stand up, because according to him only lifelong PSJ citizens are worth listening to. Many retirees who moved to PSJ and pay hefty property taxes approached the microphone and let him know how offensive his comments were. I hope people vote these officials out of office, they are not good stewards of the public trust. I've never seen a group so condescending and disrespectful of citizens, not ever.

Given that the scam has fallen of its own weight it is hoped that this action can go forward anyhow. It is my belief that DEP had more than a regulatory envolvement here and were actively promoting the trick. DEP, like many regulatory agencies, are under the control of the regulated, not the public and I would like to see the agency as well as the flakes working there brought to heel.

I think this is great news, because it's clear that incinerators are often proposed for the neighborhoods where people tend to be low income or of color.

In Burlington, VT, the biggest polluter in the state--McNeil biomass power incinerator--is within a few hundred yards of the most ethnically-diverse neighborhood in Vermont. Coincidence?
